In an attempt to give a little information, I thought that I'd offer up some character creation insight into the folks who occupy my brain and writing. I’ll post about a different one each week. For the first one, I left it up to my 12 year old daughter to choose, and like so many others, she chose Luc. Join me as I attempt to delve into this complex soul and by far, my favorite character to write.
How did Luc come to life? I would love to say he was always right there, up in my face and demanding attention, but sadly no…Luc sort of his in the shadows until he felt it was time to poke me in the eye and say “Here I am!”
When Luc first arrived, he was intended to be a counter balance to Michel. Michel was sweet, gentle; he had Maggie’s best intentions at heart. He seemed to be willing to do anything and everything he could to keep Maggie safe and protected. As a character that appeared so selfless, I felt the need to offer up a darker version of this Prince.
When we first meet Luc, he’s strolled into The Trust, wanting to know where his motorcycle is. He comes off as cynical, self absorbed, dare we say it? Conceited? It’s Luc who first gets Maggie to bring forth her powers, using his innate ability to aggravate her to the point of enlisting her fire. And Luc continues to do just that throughout book one. He makes Maggie angry, frustrated, and every time he does, her fire shows itself. I guess we would initially, without reading book 2, we’d think that was a bad thing…
When I think of Luc, I see a guy who hides, or tries to hide, his emotions deep inside himself. He sees emotions as a weakness, something that could be used against him and those he cares for. And as a soldier, that would be the right thing to do…one would think. But like a cancer, those emotions begin to eat at him.
I like to think of Luc as a reluctant hero. In book one, he wants to see his brother and Maggie happy, really happy, but that is in opposition to what he wants. It takes a strong man to set aside his feelings for the good of another. Luc does just that.
At the end of book 1, we finally get to hear Luc utter those words he has bit back on. He sets off to do what he thinks will make Maggie happy, again setting aside his feelings.
But how long can someone disregard their own feelings? How strong can one soul really be?
I see a ton of growth in Luc. Once he sets his emotions free and accepts what Destiny has given him, he cherishes it…and he will fight to his last ounce of energy is taken from him, to protect it.
Luc is fierce, determined, sarcastic, and...in love. It is my honor to write this character, who has grown beyond that snide sibling in book one.
Good Morning Realm Watchers! Today's blog post is brought to you by the letter I..as in interview!
Liam was doing a little digging through The Trust's library and happened to find an old interview that was done with the Realm Princes. I guess you would call it a "publicity piece"... After much deliberating, and none too little begging on my part, I was able to convince Liam to let me take a little peek at it. What the librarian didn't know, however, was that I'd brought my handy dandy cell phone with me. I was able to snap a few quick photos of the interview. What I saw, I've posted below...
INTERVIEW WITH PRINCES LUC AND MICHEL OF CELINE; sons of our great KING EDWYN (interviewed by Sherinz of the Tulip Folk)
Sherinz: Good day, my lords. I am honored to have the chance to sit with- *Prince Luc yawns* I apologies, your majesty, am I keeping you awake?
PM: Nevermind my brother, Sherinz. Luc finds discussing anything that doesn't center about himself boring.
PL: And rightfully so, Brother. Can you find a topic more fascinating than I?
PM: The Plague does come to mind...
S: My lords, if we may continue? I would like to begin by asking you about the recent rumors that have begun to mill around The Realm.
PL: We can stop right there...yes, it is true. Michel does, in fact, enjoy wearing women's underwear.
PM: *the prince looks angrily at his brother before focusing on this reporter again* I believe I am aware of the rumor you refer to. Could it be the one regarding the return of a long though race?
S: You have heard?
PL: The rumblings about a Phoenix found within the confines of The Mortal World? That old song and dance? I'm sure your readers would be far more interested in hearing about Michel's love of a silk thong...
S: Yes, Prince Luc...perhaps another time. Prince Michel, yes, the word has been traveling throughout the Realm that the child of Muriel and John Henning, long kept under Revenant Guard, will be making an appearance in Celine soon. Do you care to comment?
PM: At this time, I can tell little, other than to confirm the Henning child has, in fact, turned 16 Human years, bringing to an end the prearrange agreement of her safety.
S: Does this mean that Muriel Henning has been located or that John Henning will be released?
PL: Who do you work for, Wikileaks? Like we'd tell you that sort of information...
PM: At this time and to the best of my knowledge, no- Muriel Henning has not been located, nor is there any plans to release John Henning. What I can tell you is this. An especially close eye will be kept on Maggie Henning. The time is drawing closer to when she must learn of her true nature.
PL: Geez, Michel...could you sound a little more official?
S: Do either of you care to address rumors that someone close to the Henning Girl has been in place by the Revs to-
PM: I think we should stop that question there. No need to broadcast everything...
S: Indeed, your majesty. I have here another report that says a celebration is in the planning stages...that your father, King Edwyn of Celine, is planning to host an introduction of the Henning girl to the Realm Folk. Is this true?
PL: *takes paper from my hand and studies it* You've got to be kidding me? Have you seen this Michel? Really? 300 coin for an orchestra? For that kind of money, seems like we could bring in Metallica...
PM: If King Edwyn is planning a celebration, we know nothing of it.
S: ok... Prince Michel, would you care to address rumors that you've begun studying the Henning girl...making a point to be near her?
PL: this is the first I've heard of it...Michel, are you holding out on me?
PM: While it is true I have been spending more time frequenting the Mortal Realm as of late, rest assured it is only in the case of my music. Decent strings for a guitar are in short supply within The Realm
S: On a serious note, Prince Michel, would you care to adress recent reports of your personal involvement in the Lycanthropic genoc-
***PLEASE NOTE THAT AT THIS TIME, SEVERAL PAGES OF THE INTERVIEW APPEAR TO BE MISSING***
PM: please forgive my brother's sudden departure, my fae friend. Certain topic tend to bring out the worst in the Prince.
S: So I see, my apologies. *Prince Michel bows and signals I continue* I know our time grows short, Prince Michel, so if I may ask you a personal question?
PM: You may.
S: Speculation has been circling regarding your brother, Prince Luc, that there is a growing animosity between your father and him. Do you care to set the record straight?
PM: Their relationship is no more strained than any father and son's. I believe that, given time, they will both be back on a level understanding...that Prince Luc, if you will pardon the phrasing, will remember his place among our people. Now...I have an appointment at a Mortal music store. They hope my playing can bring in more business. It has been a pleasure.
Prince Michel smiles kindly as he stands, then transports himself away, ending our interview.
